Lenticular Cloud over Mammoth

The first weekend of the fall color trip was very, very windy. I had bumped into a professional photographer I knew who didn't know the area that well so I suggested heading up to Mammoth to take a photograph of the sunset - thinking the minnerets. We got up there just before sunset and it was windy and cold, and did I mention windy? It was a bit cold too.

So, setting up the tripod for the minneret sunset - it was ok, but not spetacular. Then I turned around and saw this cloud. Shouted to Jim (the professional panoramic photographer) and we grabed our tripods and ran over to find a spot where we could get a good view of it. I got about half a roll of 35mm, he got a roll of 220 ( 8 frames ) off before the light faded. Jim's photo can be seen at panoscapes.

For those who are not weatherwise, the lenticular clouds are most commonly seen in the mountains are formed with high winds over rugged terrain. Further reading [link] [link]
