Merced River Valley Poppies

Description

In July and August of this year, there was a fire near Yosemite titled the Telegraph Fire. It burnt a section outside of Yosemite Park.

Poppies thrive in adversary and stressful situations that would kill other plants. When the seed coat is burnt (or bruised - rockey areas are good for poppies too) it allows the seed itself to absorb water that next spring and bloom. This year was also an El Nino which made it difficult for other plants - but the poppies loved it.

All through the Merced River Valley of 140, the valley walls are covered with more orange than green. California poppies everywhere.

I like this one more than the other shot; the way the lines of poppies interplay with those of the rocks holds my interest more, and the way the orange is broken up into points reminds me of pontillism.
